San Pedro Area Information

The City of San Pedro is part of the city of Los Angeles, it was annexed by the city of Los Angeles which, saw the sleepy town of San Pedro as a potential source of income and prestige. The City of Los Angeles decided to make this part of the city of Los Angeles in 1909. To connect the two cities the city of Los Angeles first annexed a connecting 20-mile narrow strip of land to the port in 1906.

San Pedro Harbor - Angel's Gate

San Pedro is located on the south end of the Palos Verdes peninsula. The port was first used by the Spanish Fleet in the 1540´s. The port was under Mexican control until 1848. Since that time the port has been continually expanding as has become a major west coast port.

The war department took control of a large tract of land in 1897. In 1914 Fort MacArthur was established as a costal defense site. Many shipyards were established in the harbor including Todd shipyards which, built and repaired commercial and military ships until the mid 1980´s.

San Pedro has become on the busiest deep water ports in the country, and is part of the Port of Los Angeles

Ports of Call Village is a favorite attraction for Southern California residents and tourist´s alike featuring restaurants, shops, and a Maritime Museum. There are harbor cruises, helicopter flights and trips to nearby Catalina Island.

The Vincent Thomas Bridge connects San Pedro to the city Long Beach and is the only suspension bridge in Southern California.
