Redondo Beach History and Area Info:
The history of Redondo Beach begins in 1540 when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered the beautiful sweeping Santa Monica Bay, however it remained an Indian village for approximate two hundred years, Redondo Beach has a rich farming area which was brought about by a Spanish Grant in 1784 and remained that way as a farming area until the late 1800s. The city was incorporated on April 29, 1892 and was well served by rail and steamship lines. In the early 1900´s thru 1920´s Redondo Beach was a popular resort.
The city was the early Port of Los Angeles and when Los Angeles got another port in San Pedro the city of Redondo Beach lost the city’s shipping trade and the city grew only slowly during the great Depression and World War II . During the 1950´s and 1060´s Redondo Beach became its own, and once again became a popular resort area and well as good place to live and work and play. The Redondo Beach public Library is located 303 North Pacific Coast Highway and has approximately hundred 65,000 books and 9000 audio materials and more than 10,000 video materials.
The only remaining City High school is RedondoUnion Hish School located on Pacific Coast Highway and Vincent Streets. Adams and Parras are middle schools. The Elementary schools are Jefferson Elementary, Altavista Elementary, Washington Elementary, Beryl Heights elementary, Birney Elementary.
